
US lawmakers this week introduced a bipartisan bill that would aid efforts to develop new antibiotics.
The Stop Superbugs Act, introduced this week by Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), would authorize the National Institutes of Health’s Antimicrobial Resistance Leadership Group to facilitate clinical trials for new antibiotics to address the rising threat of drug-resistant infections.
Specific objectives of the bill include rapid recruitment of clinical trial participants, community-based recruitment outreach, pairing new antibiotics with better diagnostics during clinical trials, and development of patient-reported outcomes.
“We’ve made incredible progress because of antibiotics, but they’re only valuable if they still work,” Sen. Marshall said in a news release. “The STOP Superbugs Act helps strengthen the research network and clinical trials needed to speed new treatments from the lab to the bedside.”
A cost and national security issue
The bill was introduced in conjunction with a new report from the US Congress Joint Economic Committee, which estimates that multidrug-resistant infections in hospital patients cost the US healthcare system $5.7 billion annually. But the report notes that the actual cost is likely higher when follow-up care, patient out-of-pocket costs, lost work time, and diminished productivity are taken into account.
“Nearly 3 million Americans get sick each year with an infection that cannot be treated with the routine antibiotics that we have today,” said Sen. Hassan. “Doctors who are treating patients with a resistant infection often have to try multiple antibiotics, and in some cases, no treatment options exist.”
Hassan also warned that developing new antibiotics is a national security issue.
“If the United States does not keep up with the science and innovation coming from countries like China, we risk falling behind and becoming reliant on critical new medications that are only available abroad,” she said.
The bill is one of several in Congress that target antibiotic resistance and new antibiotic development. Others include the PASTEUR Act, which was first introduced in 2020, and has yet to be adopted, and the SUPER BUGS Act.
- There are now 45 detections of New World screwworm (NWS) in the United States, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Just five of these cases are active, all of them in Texas. The most recent infestation was reported yesterday out of Terrell County, which sits along the Mexican border. A press release from the Texas Division of Emergency Management said that NWS, a parasitic fly larva, was found in sheep. Most cases have been in cattle. Due to the detection, Texas has established a new “infested zone,” in which warm-blooded animals cannot leave the area without being inspected by someone certified through the Texas Animal Health Commission.
- A dozen new cases of vaccine-derived polio were reported this week in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and two more were found in Nigeria, according to the most recent update from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. In communities with low vaccination rates and poor sanitation, vaccine-derived poliovirus can mutate and then spread, causing paralysis just like the wild poliovirus. All the DRC cases and one of the Nigeria cases were cVDPV2, the most common strain. The other individual from Nigeria was positive for cVDPV3, making it the country’s eighth case of this strain in 2026.
- A new disease tracker is providing open-access data on the spread of measles, invasive meningococcal disease, and pertussis (whooping cough) in the United States. Johns Hopkins University launched the free platform, in collaboration with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists, to give the public access to reliable information on these vaccine-preventable diseases. The data are voluntarily provided by the health departments of 10 participating jurisdictions, with another 15 committed to joining the initiative. For non-participating states, data come from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “By providing easy to understand maps, figures, and analyses of vaccine-preventable diseases in the United States, we hope to guide public health policy decisions and inform health care providers so they can better advise and care for their patients,” said project co-lead William Moss, MD, MPH, an epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
