Wildfires and One Health: The Critical Link Between Environment, Animals, and Humans

Wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change, posing significant threats to human, animal, and environmental health. The One Health approach recognizes that wildfires are not just ecological disasters but complex health crises that demand interdisciplinary solutions.

Wildfires destroy ecosystems, leading to biodiversity loss and habitat destruction, which forces wildlife into human-populated areas, increasing the risk of zoonotic disease transmission. The air pollution caused by smoke contains fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which exacerbates respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and long-term health effects in both humans and animals.

Moreover, wildfires disrupt water systems, causing contamination from ash, debris, and runoff, leading to waterborne diseases. Livelihoods dependent on agriculture and livestock suffer from burned fields and food shortages, reinforcing food insecurity.

Addressing wildfires through a One Health lens involves integrating environmental conservation, public health preparedness, and disaster response. Preventative measures like controlled burns, reforestation, and improved urban planning can mitigate wildfire impacts. Strengthening emergency response systems and fostering cross-sector collaboration are vital in adapting to this growing threat.

By recognizing wildfires as a One Health issue, we can develop more sustainable and resilient strategies to protect our planet and all its inhabitants.

Wildfires and Environmental Impact: Flooding and Landslides

“Wildfires that burn near populated areas can have significant impact on the environment, property, livestock and human mortality and morbidity depending on the size, speed and proximity to the fire, and whether the population has advanced warning to evacuate.”
